The Lives of Animals at Salt Beyoğlu
April 16–August 10, 2025
First presented at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Antwerp (M HKA) in 2024, The Lives of Animals will be on view at Salt Beyoğlu. Programmed by Joanna Zielińska in collaboration with Salt, the exhibition reflects on the human-animal relationship, which has shifted from harmonious cohabitation to domestication and, at last, the industrialization of meat production. Named after a fictional-critical novella of J.M. Coetzee, in which the novelist discusses empathy and kindness concerning the subject of animals, the exhibition opens with a unique sonic space. The sound compositions feature laughing rats, whales, and elephants, and sounds at inaudible frequencies recorded in the Amazon rainforest by artists and researchers working in zoomusicology and ecoacoustics. The exhibition also includes works by artists from Türkiye, as well as an archival project by researcher Mine Yıldırım titled Between Care and Violence: The Dogs of Istanbul, which explores the emotional and political landscapes that shape the lives of Istanbul’s street dogs.
Realized in collaboration with the Museum of Contemporary Art in Antwerp (M HKA) and as part of L’Internationale’s Museum of the Commons project, The Lives of Animals can be viewed at Salt Beyoğlu until August 10.

Dark World at Salt Galata
July 23–November 30, 2025
Centering on the film Dark World (1953), one of the earliest examples of social realist cinema in Türkiye, a research and exhibition project by artist Mike Bode and writer Caner Yalçın will be on view at Salt Galata from July 23 to November 30, 2025. Directed by Metin Erksan and written by Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu, the film portrays the life of folk poet Âşık Veysel. Set against the social and economic backdrop of 1950s Anatolia, the film faced heavy censorship, and as a consequence, large parts of it had to be cut out and supplemented with arbitrary and new material in order to comply with the censorship board. Rather than attempting to reconstruct the original film, the exhibition will accordingly explore the fate of the film itself.
Founded by Garanti BBVA, Salt is a not-for-profit cultural institution engaging in research, exhibitions, publications, web projects, and public programs at the intersections of visual practices, the built environment, social life, and economic history.
